SSID Security: Forget Saved Networks

SSID Security: Forget Saved Networks

Did you know??? Saved Networks = Vulnerabilities.

Every time your phone’s Wi-Fi is on, it “probes” for saved networks (e.g., “Smith Home WiFi” or “My Gym WiFi” etc.). Attackers, stalkers, or surveillance tools can capture these probe requests and infer your past locations (home Wi-Fi, offices, hotels, gyms, events, schools, training facilities, etc.). This data can build a pattern of your routines — where you live, work, train, travel, study, or stay.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Forget Old Networks: Regularly clear your saved Wi-Fi list, especially identifiably labeled home, gym, hotel, or event networks.
    • On iPhone: Settings → Wi-Fi → Edit (top right) → Forget Unused Networks
    • On Android: Settings → Network & Internet → Internet → Saved networks → Forget
  • Disable Auto-Join or Auto-Connect: Only manually join networks you trust.
  • Turn off Wi-Fi when not in use: Especially while traveling or commuting.
  • Use a VPN: Even if you connect to a spoofed or public network, a VPN will encrypt your data and reduce exposure.
  • Randomize Your MAC Address – Both iOS and Android offer “Private Wi-Fi Address” options — keep this enabled.
  • Use a Travel Device or Secondary Profile – For high-profile or at-risk individuals (like athletes), use a separate phone or secondary user profile when traveling internationally.
