One Browser for Convenience, One for Privacy

Most people want more privacy online, but switching entirely to a heavily restricted browser can create problems. Logins may fail, payment pages may not load correctly, embedded content may disappear, and commonly used features may stop working.

The answer does not have to be choosing between convenience and privacy. A practical alternative is to use two separate browser environments—one for normal activity and another for privacy-sensitive browsing.

Why Use Two Browsers?

Browsers accumulate information about how they are used. This can include cookies, browsing history, saved accounts, autofill information, extensions, search activity, permissions, and other identifiers. When everything happens in one browser, personal accounts and everyday activity can become connected with research, interests, and other browsing that the user may prefer to keep separate.

Using a second browser or dedicated browser profile creates a boundary between these activities. It reduces the ability of cookies, saved accounts, extensions, and browsing history from one environment to follow the user into the other. This is called compartmentalization: separating activities so information from one area does not automatically carry into another.

The Recommended Setup

Use a conventional browser for normal daily activity. This may be Chrome, Safari, Edge, or another regularly updated browser that works reliably with the websites and services you use.

Use it for:

  • Work platforms
  • Email
  • Banking
  • Shopping
  • Social media
  • Streaming
  • Websites requiring saved accounts
  • Services where compatibility is important

Then use a separate privacy-focused browser for:

  • Sensitive-topic research
  • Temporary browsing sessions
  • Websites you do not want added to your normal history
  • Research you do not want mixed with your regular advertising profile
  • Browsing without personal accounts already signed in
  • Visiting heavily tracked websites
  • Comparing products or services before signing in

Desktop Setup: Create a Private Firefox Profile

Installing Firefox alone provides some separation from Chrome or Safari. Creating a dedicated Firefox profile provides an additional boundary.

A Firefox profile maintains its own history, cookies, passwords, bookmarks, extensions, and preferences.

To create one:

  1. Install Firefox and keep automatic updates enabled.
  2. Enter the following into the address bar: about:profiles
  3. Select “Create a New Profile.”
  4. Name it something recognizable, such as “Private.”
  5. Launch the new profile in a separate browser window.

For better separation, do not connect this profile to the same browser-sync account or personal accounts used for everyday browsing.

Recommended Firefox Privacy Settings

Open Firefox Settings and select Privacy & Security.

  • Enhanced Tracking Protection – Set Enhanced Tracking Protection to Strict. Firefox already provides Total Cookie Protection under its standard protection. Strict mode adds stronger blocking of cross-site cookies, tracking content, fingerprinters, social trackers, cryptominers, and certain redirect-based tracking. Strict protection can occasionally interfere with logins, forms, payments, comments, or embedded videos. If a trusted website does not work, temporarily create an exception for that website instead of weakening protection globally.
  • HTTPS-Only Mode – Enable HTTPS-Only Mode for all windows. This instructs Firefox to use encrypted HTTPS connections whenever a website supports them. A warning will appear before Firefox connects to a website that is available only through an unencrypted connection.
  • DNS Over HTTPS – Enable DNS over HTTPS in the Privacy & Security settings. This encrypts domain-name lookups so they are not transmitted as ordinary, readable DNS requests. It does not conceal all internet activity, and it may conflict with corporate security systems, parental controls, or network-level threat filtering.
  • Global Privacy Control – Enable “Tell websites not to sell or share my data.” This sends a Global Privacy Control signal to websites. It is recognized as a privacy request in some jurisdictions, although it is only a signal and does not physically block tracking.
  • Browsing Data – Configure Firefox to clear cookies, site data, and browsing history when the privacy profile closes. If you need certain sessions to remain available, clear this information manually after sensitive browsing instead.
  • Data Collection – Under Firefox Data Collection and Use, disable technical and interaction data sharing if you do not want the browser sending optional performance and feature-use information to Mozilla.
  • Extensions – Keep extensions to a minimum. Every extension introduces additional code and permissions into the browser. Only install extensions from reputable sources, review their requested permissions, and remove anything no longer needed. Firefox’s built-in protections may be sufficient for many users without adding multiple privacy extensions.
  • Updates – Allow Firefox to update automatically and restart it when an update is ready. Browser vulnerabilities are regularly discovered in every major browser. Staying current is more important to security than choosing a browser and then failing to update it.

Mobile Setup: Firefox Focus

On a mobile device, Firefox Focus provides a simple dedicated browser for temporary and privacy-sensitive sessions.

It can block known advertising, analytics, social, and other content trackers. It also provides a prominent erase function that clears the current session.

Recommended setup:

  1. Install Firefox Focus.
  2. Open Settings and enable Enhanced Tracking Protection.
  3. Enable blocking for advertising, analytics, and social trackers.
  4. Consider blocking other content trackers, but understand that this may prevent videos, slideshows, and other embedded content from working.
  5. Disable anonymous usage data if you do not want to provide optional analytics.
  6. Use the erase control after each private session.
  7. Avoid signing into personal accounts unless the activity must be connected to your identity.

If a website does not work properly, open it in the normal browser. That is the purpose of maintaining two separate options.

Privacy Does Not Mean Anonymity

A separate browser can reduce tracking and keep activities from being mixed together, but it does not make the user invisible.

Websites may still see:

  • The device’s IP address
  • Approximate location
  • Device and browser characteristics
  • Information deliberately entered into a form
  • Accounts used to sign in
  • Payment or shipping information
  • Files downloaded from the website

Your internet provider, employer, network administrator, or VPN provider may also retain some visibility depending on the connection and configuration.

Signing into the same Google, Microsoft, social media, or shopping account in both browsers also gives that service a direct way to associate the sessions.

A VPN can reduce IP-based exposure and protect traffic on the local network, but it does not prevent identification when the user signs into an account or submits identifying information.

Security Still Matters in Both Browsers

The everyday browser should not be treated as disposable or insecure.

Keep its security protections enabled, install updates promptly, remove unnecessary extensions, use a password manager, and enable multifactor authentication on important accounts.

Chrome users should keep Safe Browsing enabled. Enhanced Protection may identify previously unknown threats more quickly, but it also sends additional URLs, page samples, extension activity, and system information to Google for security analysis. Users should select the protection level that best matches their risk and privacy priorities.

Safari users should enable Prevent Cross-Site Tracking and keep macOS, iOS, and Safari updated.

A Practical Balance

The goal is not to make ordinary browsing difficult. The goal is to place different activities into the appropriate environment.

Use the regular browser when compatibility and convenience matter. Use the privacy-focused browser when you want fewer trackers, less retained history, and greater separation from your everyday accounts.

This approach is easy to maintain, costs nothing, and provides meaningful privacy improvements without requiring the user to sacrifice the normal functionality of a modern browser.
