This is a very common question for anyone looking to get into EP or advance their career. Below is my best and honest answer, based on my experiences and professional opinion.

The best way I can suggest to assess what training you will need to make yourself more marketable / valuable is to research the job openings on Linkedin, Indeed, etc. that are of interest to you, and note their required and preferred qualifications/certifications. There is no better way to get a realistic assessment of what hiring entities are looking for. Consider this avoid opinions of training providers – myself included.

“Peerlessly Realistic, Relevant & Valuable”

See our training schedule and locations here

Additionally, you can contact those same companies, and discuss this topic with their recruiters/HR to find out what makes candidates stick out to them during the selection process. This will give you great insight into what can set you apart when applying.

If you are not looking for “high threat” work, avoid investing your time and money (and GI Bill) into “high threat” courses. This should be obvious, but unscrupulous marketing makes me have to say it. Further, even if you are seeking “high threat” work, avoid investing in courses which don’t give you the certs you need to gain employment in that field until you have them, then invest in training to further better yourself, as any professional should.

Join our Facebook Group

Bottom line – Any time spent with rifles and body armor is useless for non-war zone EP. No hiring manager cares to see that. And even further it shows the wrong mindset and/or how you got sold on use-car salesman tactics by schools selling the wrong stuff to industry hopefuls with GI bill funds.

Last word – be cautious of those who disagree with what I said.

From the AS Solution Blog: From the insurance industry to a career in executive protection – It’s all about customer service

Interviewer’s question: That sounds like a good start, but it’s all entry-level security jobs. How did you break into executive protection?

“I knew if I was going to advance my career and eventually obtain the kinds of opportunities that I wanted, I would have to go through a well-respected executive protection training course. I did my due diligence and read great reviews about Lasorsa and Associates’ Executive Protection Training Course taught by Joe Lasorsa, Jr. I did my first course there.

During this course, Joe opened my eyes. He made it extremely clear that despite me not having a military or law enforcement background, I could still go for a good career in the executive protection and security industries. He showed us that the hard skills still play a huge role in executive protection and that these can always be learned and improved upon. But he also advised me that customer service, soft skills, and personability are much more important than all the hard skills.

The course made me realize that executive protection is so much more than escorting a client. I learned that it also requires great attention to the nitty-gritty and sharp analytical skills to plan security details. I learned that it takes quite a bit of intelligence to be an executive protection agent and that what we do is so much more than the stereotypes that portray us goons with guns and a combat-ready mentality, with zero preparedness and no plan.

At the beginning of the course I was nervous about my lack of experience and felt that the other classmates were somehow better than me; by the end of the course, I was one of the leaders and others were looking to me for answers when it came to working with apps and computers and planning advances.

Joe’s training program was realistic, relevant and valuable. It prepared me for the real-life situations that I now face every day, including how to boost productivity for the client and proactively tackle common, everyday tasks such as planning trips with advances and logistics, setting up electronics, answering phones, sending emails, and sometimes acting as a property manager, etc. This course is where I realized that my background in the health insurance industry could actually be a plus and help set me apart.”

Max Montoya

Max Montoya is a focused, results-driven professional who transitioned into security after a successful stint in the insurance industry, where his responsibilities included customer service and risk analysis. Max began his career in protective security by providing close protection and secure driving for a number of high net worth clients, with an emphasis in effective procedures, efficient operations, and productive team management. A strategic leader who excels in security program development, implementation, and management, Max has strong communication skills and is adept in building relationships with clients, partners, supervisors, and team members. In addition to his college education, Max has successfully completed a number of executive protection and medical training courses.

“Do I need training?” “How much does it cost?” “Who is the ‘best’ provider?” Etc. Etc.

These questions are and always will be rampant throughout the various social media groups as the desire to get into executive protection will always be there. In my opinion, it takes a distinct individual to be successful in protective services, so only the top tier of physical security professionals will survive the jump up to executive protection and there-in lies the problem: the desire is larger than the need. Much like a threat assessment, the fears almost always surpass the reality, (and they should), therefore a pragmatic decision must be made. To mitigate threats, the appropriate level of resources are applied, similarly an appropriate selection must be made regarding employment in this small, niche field.

To get straight to the point – No training provider can guarantee employment, there are simply too many variables to do so. Similarly, any training provider who promises a ‘letter of recommendation’ might as well be offering you used toilet paper instead. Another common issue is whether or not educational benefits should be used for training. Personally I do not think you should have to use your VA Educational Benefits for training, considering how the appropriate level/increment of training is affordable enough to fund it on your own and see a return on your investment. Also you should consider how continuous training is much more beneficial than a ‘one and done’ methodology.

The ‘Need’
Is there a need for training? Unequivocally, the answer is yes. This is not just my opinion, this is based on the facts of current employment criteria of the majority of opportunities out there, especially subcontracted opportunities.

7 Day Executive Protection Training Program – EP, Medical, Driving

The most straight forward advice I can give anyone is this: Research job posts to find relevant jobs similar to what you would like to obtain. Note the job’s required and preferred qualifications so you can establish a benchmark in which to ‘check the boxes’ so to speak, and begin working towards satisfying those requirements as best you can. Find a training provider who does what you want to do and does it well – avoid the charlatans who talk but don’t walk.

Additionally, market yourself at every opportunity; actively seek out opportunities and jobs and do good work when you get it. Focus on the following:
1. Networking: Network with everyone and through every medium. Don’t pass on any opportunity and don’t burn bridges.
2. Licenses: Get the licenses you need to provide unarmed and armed protective services in your state. This can be affordably done through state sponsored training providers and does not need to cost you thousands of dollars. For example, there are literally hundreds of providers offering the ‘PPS’ license for Virginia for a few hundred dollars.
3. Training & Certifications: Find relevant, valuable and quality training for the job you are looking for – if you need a specific certification, make sure it is of value in your state. Most employers are seeking executive protection training, medical response certification and defensive/evasive driver training.
4. Experience: Expect to start at the bottom and work your way up. Take what you can get when you can get it for the experience and networking. Do a good job when given the opportunity – your referrals will be exponential. Stay out of the media.

Fundamental Soft Skills
Hard skills are impossible to train to standard in one period of instruction, they must be trained continuously. That being said, avoid protective services training courses that involve a heavy emphasis on the hard skills, and rather seek a fundamental lesson of the soft skills. A basic, fundamental approach is the most appropriate methodology for open enrollment training as there is no standard ecosphere within the protection industry; no two corporations or clients will have the same needs and wants. The more specific your training is, the higher the chances it will not apply to your job’s demands. This is the only way legitimate protective services can be applied in the private sector, otherwise you are simply a response mechanism. In my opinion, which is based on my experiences, the biggest vulnerability among current practitioners is the seemingly accepted practice or mentality in which just being there is enough, relying on those hard skills.

Jobs Board

Also, be careful to not make yourself a liability with high threat training – make sure your potential employer knows you are licensed and insured and do not present yourself as a weapon. (Weapons/firearms, martial arts training are OK but if that’s all you have you are not employable) Do not waste your time/money on a high threat course – if you want to do that, the company that hires you (Aegis, Triple Canopy, etc.) will train you regardless and private courses will not help.

Age is a Factor, but…
In my experiences, being 40+ is not a bad thing at all. The hiring pool is flooded with mid-late 20s fresh out of the military or otherwise, and to be honest most executives and families I have been involved with prefer someone who fits in with their crowd better than a 25 year old with a high-and-tight, if that makes sense. (I can say this as I am a jarhead myself) So while it is not a hindrance, you will also need the right training and certifications, and licenses, etc.

Employment Hot-Spots
The most work that I see is in Wash DC, San Fran Bay area, NYC, Los Angeles, Miami, DFW/Houston – In that order – and my input is based on the following: amount of work I have, amount of jobs I find and post on our blog, amount of our students who have had success in those areas post training and salary range. This is important as if you are currently located in another area, as the ability to find work will be reduced.

Training Schedule & Locations

Don’t Get Sold by Salesmen
A good indicator of the altruism of a provider is whether or not they have a social presence and contribute publicly. If not, chances are they are trying to hide behind the facade of their website only or they are only interested in getting you to sign up, pay and get it over with.

Over the past few years in particular, I have witnessed more and more training providers advertising courses using odorous stereotypes and flashy depictions, falsifying what is needed in order to gain interest and exploit the ignorant. Most alarmingly, much like a toilet that won’t flush, in the aftermath of such poor investment such providers leave students awash in the exact horrific stench of myth and nonsense that got them there in the first place.

My recent efforts and the efforts from others who contribute similarly have the objectives to debunk the growing perception that all training is created equal, and to shine a light on the widening skills gap created by unnecessary and ineffective training.

Like so many other companies who rely on a skilled workforce, security providers like myself are struggling to find the next generation of well trained and motivated tradesmen. Yes, tradesmen, not knuckle draggers and shooters. Right now, as I write this, there are plenty of good jobs available. I know because I post 100-250 jobs per month on our jobs board. But only a select few seem up to the task and the reasons have nothing to do with low pay or poor benefits, they have to do with the lack of appropriate training, licensing and resultant experience.

Know What You’re Worth
As the eloquent Joker says to his fellow henchman in The Dark Knight: “If you are good at something, never do it for free.” The same applies for training providers: we all know what we are worth, but consider the relativity in the ‘value.’ For example, good training is expensive and a track with vehicles and insurance costs more than a banquet room alone… Invest in yourself, ensuring the time and money investment is a valuable contribution to your skill set or marketability, preferably both.

_

In closing – don’t get fooled; do your research and find what is best suited to meet your goals with a reasonable time and monetary investment and who is best to do it. Along with the help of many who are contributing to this issue, I’m hopeful this message will spread to raise enough awareness to make a splash in the metaphorical miasma of misinformation clogging the proverbial commode as mentioned above. Thanks for reading, you have already done your part, now share.

I do not see myself as an “instructor” but rather a fellow trainer as learning always occurs both ways and those who have had the experience of discussing the topic with me have heard me say “I am looking forward to training with you” or have heard me correct someone who refers to me as their instructor by saying “we have trained together.” A phrase that has stuck with me from early on in my professional career has been “Know enough to know that you don’t know – always a student, always learning.” – JAL

My exposure to and background in professional training started when I was 18 and working towards my Private Investigations and Security license in Florida as an intern. I quickly learned the difference between valuable training and courses that were designed to “check the box”, so to speak. Many state required courses included information and topics that seemed irrelevant and later proved to be just that, while on the job training and learning from experienced professionals proved to be the most effective and useful. However, formal training that was founded on the basics and provided fundamental understanding paved the foundation for the on-the-job training to be so effective.

After graduating college, my training included the Marine Corps pipeline for an infantry officer, followed by light armored reconnaissance. During my time in the military, I served as a Battalion training officer, tasked with developing and ensuring the effectiveness and satisfactory completion of training plans across the entire mission essential task list spectrum. My success at this position eventually granted me one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences I have ever had professionally – being assigned as a department OIC for developing training plans at Marine Corps’ Special Operations Training Group (or SOTG) as a First Lieutenant. While on this assignment, I was taught to design, implement and evaluate training plans through course such as the USMC Training and Education Command’s Instructor Skills Course and others.

Training, and more specifically to train others, is a passion of ours and as an industry leading training provider we get to live our passion by providing effective and meaningful training to a wide range of students. Passion drives success, and in that fashion we routinely assess and update our training plans and curriculum to best meet the needs of our students. Additionally, those changes and updates are highly influenced by the reviews of our graduates submitted upon completion.
For Training Schedule & Registration see here.

One of the many aspects of our programs that set us apart is our training courses have the foundation of being compiled by someone who has conducted protective operations at the highest level attainable – a former Senior Special Agent of the US Secret Service assigned to Presidential Protection, The White House. Additionally, given my background in the design and implementation of evaluated training programs at Tier 1 levels, we have come up with a solution that has brought a tremendous degree of success to many over the last 16 years.

In this blog, we would like to discuss the important factors in determining what training to take as well as what is important to focus on as an instructor, as most of us, in one way or another, will fill the role of an instructor, be it on-the-job or as a training provider. Below are 5 important considerations in selecting, receiving and providing professional training.

1. Realistic, relevant and practical.

This consideration is first on the list as training that is not realistic, relevant and practical is essentially useless. The topics and information presented in your training should serve a real world purpose, and it should be expected to be utilized in at least 70% of your efforts in the day-to-day of your position. This is referred to as the 70% solution – if the training topic is to be effectively used in the day-to-day of your job less than 30% of the time, you should not focus the majority of your training dollars learning how to do it. In example: as a personal protection specialist, firearms training is often sought after by newcomers to the industry as they believe it is a primary skill that requires a lot of their training time and dollars devoted to it. Yet in every training course I have been a part of I have asked the students to present knowledge of a protection agent who used a firearm to save his client – there has yet to be a response. The fundamental skill of firearms is important; when you need it, you’d better have it. However, you should not spend a week at the range or attend some famous firearm trainer’s course and then believe that you can provide protective services. If you research executive protection training, most of what you will find will inherently include some kind of flashy firearms training photos, typically with a rifle/carbine, tactical kit with vest and pictures of the students conducting patrols and live fire drills. While this may be necessary if you intend to work for a PMC overseas in a high threat environment, this is highly regarded by anyone experienced in the private sector in CONUS to be useless in this field.

2. Challenge the information.

Do not just ‘drink the coolaid’ – ask how, ask when and most importantly ask why. A rational, realistic and practical explanation should follow; if not you need to come up with your own solution that solves those questions to your satisfaction. We constantly challenge the information we present and welcome students to do the same as this drives effectiveness in what we teach. Additionally, in almost every problem or situation, there is no one size fits all solution so in addition to asking questions, make the problem realistic and relevant to your intended task and environment in order to challenge the solution based on those parameters.

3. Avoid “definitive” applications.

‘Always’ or ‘never’ should be extremely rare in any training context. A fundamental application of a skill should be the focus of your training, not a cookie-cutter solution – such as the “if this happens…do this, if that happens…do that’ method of training. This is highly ineffective and will not prepare the graduates for success outside of that box. In today’s world, the personal protection specialist is required to do a whole lot more than in the past, mostly due to technology and current economic constraints; that is why an x=y training methodology could never effectively prepare a student.
“Give a man to fish, feed him for a day – Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.”
A fundamental grasp of a concept or skill will enable a student to apply that concept to any circumstance – and this is the only effective way to truly train a student in a limited amount of time.

4. Enable a new skill or improve on a skill while ensuring a standard is met or exceeded.

To enhance your marketability and job proficiency should be primary goals of your training time and dollars. “The ultimate goal of training is to either provide someone the ability to do something they were not previously capable of, or to improve upon their existing capability.” – Joe Autera, VDI This improvement needs to be effectively measured based on the task and purpose of the skill and the standard at which that measurement is compare to is equally important in terms of the performance benchmark that the student is being held to. In example, a standardized test may be a good option in measuring a student’s capability of meeting a standard; or perhaps a pass/fail objective measurement of a student’s capability to apply a skill may suffice. However standardized tests only measure one of two things, either the students grasp of protection theory or their ability to memorize information; conversely a pass/fail performance standard is inevitably subjective based on an instructors own knowledge, experience, attitude and prejudices. Therefore, an acceptable method would be to not only provide a standardized test but also an objective measurement of practical application.

The curriculum in its design and implementation is also very important to the success in evaluating student’s capabilities. Many factors increase the effectiveness of a well-designed training program, namely a low student/instructor ratio delivered by professional instructors with both practical experience and an in-depth knowledge of adult learning as well as an early intervention and remediation process. Another point is one of the most crucial elements of learning fundamental skills rests in how that individual student can best apply those skills once learned. In this fashion, it is best to teach a method, not the method and individually make the student better at what they elect as their method of choice to achieve the desired solution.

5. Brilliance in the Basics

Referencing firearms training again – focusing on just pistols is far more worthwhile due to the simple fact that in over a decade of providing protective services, I have carried nothing other than a pistol (…in the 5-10% of the time I am even armed). Furthermore, although there are many training courses that do focus on just pistols, the application of the likely, real world situations is still missed. In example: Last year I attended a training course by an “industry leading” firearms manipulations instructor, and was surprised to see how little time was spent on the basics and how much time was spent on things such as “weak hand only slide manipulation and target engagement”. While this is not a totally useless skill, it comes very close to it, and when instructing students in tactics that may one day save their life (or their clients) wouldn’t the students be much better served learning skills that will have a much higher probably of actually needing to be applied? The odds of a gunfight are extremely low, (even lower if you are good at your job) and the odds of a gun fight in which you can only use your weak hand to reload are even lower (when compared to the FBI’s statistics that most engagements involving the discharge of a firearm are within 7 yards with 3 shots fired in an average of 3 seconds) Essentially, training a weak hand only reload (for most in the security industry) is like preparing for a shark attack while being struck by lightning at the same time.

For most people, sticking to the basics is what will make them a better shooter. Almost every top shooter in the competitive world does not resort to fancy tricks; they are simply very effective at applying the basics. This concept does not just apply to firearms training, but all training.

For Training Courses see here.
Final word – advanced tactics, flashy moves and specialty training are good only if you are ready for them, but do not skip over the fundamentals. Focus 90% of your training time on the basics that you are most likely to apply in 70% of your daily activities given your task and environment while ensuring the skills you are learning can uphold the test of being asked ‘why.’

——————————————————————————
